Strategic acquisition or cross-licensing of patent portfolios has become increasingly common in the last few years. Patents are no more visualized as mere few pages of documents but as an investable asset class and recent high profile transactions have garnered higher interest among C-suite in leading technology companies. We have seen various technology giants acquiring the portfolios of smaller companies to bolster their own IP assets and establish their position in the market. Nokia-Alcatel, Broadcom-Avago, Google-Motorola are the few examples of the rapidly changing perception of IP in the market. Click here to request a quote/sample.
We have a proprietary automated patent rating system which we use to rate patent portfolios. The algorithm used for generating this rating is based on various bibliographic parameters combined with market trends. We recommend this for a very quick evaluation of any patent portfolio. A score is calculated for each patent in the portfolio using this algorithm and this score decides the strength of the patents. This rating has received great feedback from all of our clients.
For large portfolios, we conduct a screening analysis for each patent in the set. The outcome of the analysis is a detailed report having a list of patents with a cumulative score for each patent. The score is calculated on the basis of various parameters, such as ease of detection of infringement, breadth/scope of claims, remaining lifetime of patent, number of backward/forward citations, and so on. The patents having high cumulative score will go analyzed in the next phase of analysis.
For each patent, a quick search is conducted for products which could be infringing the claims. A summarized claim chart having key features of patents mapped to products will be prepared. This analysis will help you identify important patents in the portfolio that can strengthen the protection your products receive and also find strong patents with high monetization potential.
Based on the previous analysis, the patents with high chances of being infringed are analyzed further and a concise report is prepared for each one of them. Each report will have a summary of the invention, significance of the technology, potential infringing product(s), estimated revenue for the infringing products and a preliminary claim chart highlighting the evidence of use.
For patents with positive evidence of use results, PatVerse will build a detailed evidence of use claim chart that provides a claim element to product feature mapping.
Some patents in the portfolio can be declared essential to certain technology standards. We also help clients in identifying the patents that are essential to technology standards. We identify the technology standards and further provide detailed reports having mapping of claims of the patent to these standards.
